110. Three odd but effective ways to prepare for public speaking

Ok not odd! Let's just say non-traditional. In this episode I share three practical techniques I use to prepare for public speaking - and they're not the things you might expect. With a splash of spirituality, it's amazing how quickly you can connect to your voice and tap into your inner confidence!

Hello. Hello. Welcome back to That Voice Podcast. Welcome if you're here for the first time, this episode is called Three odd but effective ways to prepare for public speaking. And I use the word odd because it sounded catchy in the title. I really mean methods that are not traditional. They're holistic.

They're spiritual. If you've been following me for a while, you'll see that I'm going more and more in this direction because it's true. The human voice is the organ of the soul. The human voice is the organ of the soul quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I always feel really smart when I say that. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The human voice is the organ of the soul and I've found.

With the clients I work with. And for myself, the more you look at voice and confidence and public speaking through the mind, body, spirit connection, the bigger transformation you get. If you're not looking at it through this lens, you're missing an incredible opportunity for growth, but you're also missing the point largely. Because everything is integrated.

Everything is connected. It's quite extraordinary. I've found that if we can grow as humans, we grow our voice. If we can clear blockages, clear trauma from our body, we clear blockages for our voice. If we can connect with our highest self, if we can connect with our soul, we can connect with our voice and feel beautiful about it along the way.

And this is why I started Speak from your Soul, which is my six- week online course, a spiritual journey to find your authentic voice and make it heard. I'm decided to run it again. Of course, I ran it last year for the first time and it was so beautiful. If you are looking to improve your voice and confidence in public speaking.

Are we ready to hear these three odd slash not traditional slash holistic slash spiritual ways to prepare for public speaking? The first one is aura breathing. Aura breathing. So we've spoken a lot about breathing oxygen fuels. Oh, okay. That's an understatement.

There is so much we can do with breathing. But have you combined it with your aura? So our aura is like this energetic field around us and some people can actually see it. My auntie can see auras. She just looks at a person and she can see what color it is, what shape it is, how big it is. It's quite extraordinary.

We all have this aura and if we can make it big and bright whatever color you like and really beautiful and charged, I guess, is the word for it before we speak it is going to make a difference because our voice vibrates well beyond our vocal cords.

Our whole entire being vibrates and a lot of these electromagnetic waves, you can't see, it's like wifi, right? You can't see it. You can't hear it. You can't smell it, but you're sure as hell know if it's not working. So it's the same kind of thing. So this aura breathing, exercise, interlace your fingers together and then push your palms away from you and push them away from you.

And then as you breathe in. We're raised your hands above your head. And as you breathe out, bring them down by your side. So it's even up through the middle, out, down along the sides. And as you're doing that, you are visualizing your aura. You are painting your aura with your fingers. What color is it? How bright is it?

How big is it? It's like, you're weaving your own little orb. You know, that's like funny things that people roll down the Hills in, you know, like there's, what are they called? It's like, I've never been in one. I find them to be terrifying and claustrophobic, but they go in these big bouncy balls and roll around.

That's what I imagined that you're creating for yourself when you are doing this exercise. And so then. Click live on your video or you walk onto stage or speak in your meeting, whatever it is, you have got that whole ball of energy, right with you. So try it. That's aura breathing.

Now the second thing is aromatherapy. So I use aromatherapy.

Lots of my life, I've started using a lavender balm before I go to sleep. And that has been so effective. I'm one of those people that when I lie down to go to sleep, it doesn't really work that way. And I get anxiety and my mind races through all the things that I should've done that day, or I feel like I needed to do the next day.

I'm sure a lot of you can relate to this. And I thought this is ridiculous. I need to be able to tell my body that it's sleep time. And one of the things I've started doing is rubbing this beautiful lavender balm on my temples and then a little bit under my nose so I can smell it. And so when I smell the lavender, it really tells my body it's time to rest, time to sleep.

And it has totally improved my sleep. Now we do not want to be falling asleep before we speak. I would not recommend that. So I've got another beautiful blend. I got it just in a show bag at a Business Chicks event, I think. And it's peppermint, but also orange and a few other blends in there. And when I smell it, it straight away takes me into the zone.

So I smell it before I go live. Uh, before I start coaching, I keep it in my handbag. If I'm speaking at an event... Because you know how smell is really closely linked to our memory, like it can really trigger a memory when we smell something. So by having this little 'performance oil', I call it and smelling it, it's like straightaway I'm on. I'm on, I'm there. And it's really effective, uh, when life happens. All right. So, you know, like maybe before I go live for my, cause I don't know. I might not be feeling great. Something might've happened. I might've gotten annoying email while though I do try to not look at emails right before. But you know, if you need to switch up your energy. You know, if you need to snap out of it. It can be a really great way to do that. And you can have different sense for all types of energy, energy zones you'd like to jump into. If you want to relax, you want to sleep. Like I mentioned, the one I'd encourage you to get is the speaking performance one. Speaking performance one. So, uh, for communication, peppermint and spearmint are excellent for communication, but it's really about finding something that works for you.

What smell gets you in the zone? And speaking of which, maybe it's also a particular perfume. Maybe it's a particular moisturizer. It doesn't have to be essential oils, but what is something that you can smell to put you into that zone?

Okay. So the final one is affirmations with a twist. Affirmations with a twist, and that is speaking your affirmations into a glass of water.

So normally before speaking, or while speaking, we're going to have a glass of water nearby. If you don't, you should. Hydrating is super important. So speaking the affirmation into the water. It's like we are speaking to those water molecules and then they can come back and speak to all of the water molecules inside our body.

The energy in the glass is speaking to the energy in our body. And you might've heard of that study that was done, where they spoke negative words to water, and then they spoke positive words to water. And the water that was spoken to more kindly had more beautiful crystalline structures in it when it froze.

It's really interesting. If you'd like more information about that, just get in touch and I'll send you the link to the studies. And just try it, you know, like, even if you're listening to this going, oh Sal, my God, like, this is totally woo-woo. Why not try it? Even if it's just a placebo for you, just to see. I've found it's made such a difference for me and for so many of the clients I'm working with. It also helps you focus if nothing else. So you look into your glass of water and you say your affirmation. So what are mine, I might say, 'I was born to do this. People want to listen to me. I deserve this space. I have something valuable to say my voice is strong and powerful'. And I'll be focusing, looking at that water, speaking into that water.

So the vibrations from my voice are hitting the water. And then that's the water I'm drinking throughout. So it's like, you've just turned a normal glass of water into a supercharged Powerade without all the sugar. So it's really good. This talk of water is making me want to have a drink. Normally I cut out the parts and the podcasts when I'm having a drink, but given the subject matter, I'll just keep that in for today.

So there you have it. The first one is aura breathing, using your arms to match the breaths and visualizing that electromagnetic field that you're painting. Drawing. Number two is find a scent. Find a performance scent. And number three is speak your affirmations into water.
