Three lessons from 10-days of silence

In November 2023 I embarked on a 10 day silent Vipassana Meditation Course in the UK countryside. The irony of a voice coach going quiet is not lost on me! The experience was a lot harder than I expected, and I took away these three big lessons.

1. The power of DISCIPLINE

The strict rules - including no speaking, no reading, no writing, no exercise and no dinner, coupled with the gruelling timetable of 10+ hours meditation a day, really challenged my discipline. But just because something is hard – mentally, physically, or emotionally - doesn’t mean there isn’t value in it. Short-term pain really does add up to long-term gain.

2. The importance of PERSPECTIVE + GRATITUDE

Despite feeling so sad most days, I needed to get a grip. We weren’t being physically harmed, and there are many people who would love the opportunity to fly to the other side of the world and take part in this course. Ten days is such a short time in the scheme of things and there is SO much to be grateful for.

3. MORE about myself

I often ask clients - “what do you do for fun? What do you like doing?” And sometimes they can’t answer. During the ten days I got crystal clarity on the things I enjoy doing and what gives me life. It gave me a unique insight into my personality and focus on how I want to spend my precious time.
