A lot of advice is forgettable, isn't it?

We're bombarded with so much content - it's catchy one-liners that stick in our memories.

So in today's episode I'm sharing 3 of my favourite one-liners that will transform your speaking:

1. SET THE ENERGY DON'T GET THE ENERGY.

2. YOU CAN'T INSPIRE OTHERS, IF YOU DON'T FIRST INSPIRE YOURSELF.

And in all my coaching there are key principals we work by.

I sometimes call these my coffee table book quotable quotes.

Or my one-liners.

These will shift your perspective and work to shift your beliefs around speaking.

Your physical voice is a megaphone for your inner voice, so integrating these one-liners will transform your speaking.

I have SO many one-liners -

AND… big news … these will be in my BOOK. Which is finally coming along. I’ve signed with a publisher, I’ve applied for a Trademark and make sure you’re following my socials because I’ll be taking you along the wild ride.

Today I’ll share with you just 3 of these phrases.

The first one is SET THE ENERGY, DON’T GET THE ENERGY.

YOU get to decide what energy you bring the room to your voice and make it so strong, it’s catching.

It’s all good and well to feed off the energy of the audience, if that energy is good.

But what if you get an audience of yawners, resting bitch faces, or just people not enthused to be there.

Imagine it like Wifi, you can’t see it, you can’t hear it but everyone knows if it’s working or not. You want that wifi signal from you to be the one everyone picks up on.

You have the ability to shift the energy of the room, to change the temperature.

And it’ important to note here, it doesn’t mean bouncing into any scenario like you’ve waltzed off the set of a kids tv show, it means being able to tap into the energy of the room and adjust accordingly.

It’s often not setting the energy but resetting the energy.

I remember doing a workshop to help leaders with their toolbox talk… and it was for the nightshift crew, so our workshop began at 6am off the back of a nightshift. Can you imagine, how impressed the group was to have a 4 hour speaking workshop at the end of their work day?

If I bounded in like the first day of Spring, they probably would’ve hated me even more.

So I needed to clock in to the energy of the situation and I said ‘Oh god, a 4 hour public speaking workshop off the back of night shift, who planned that?’

And then I made a promise to get straight to the point and be done in 3 hours tops.

And that shifted the energy and the group was with me.

The key here, is it is in your control. If the audience looks bored that is not a sign to disengage, speak really fast and get out of there. It’s an invitation to SET THE ENERGY, NOT GET THE ENERGY.

Ok, one-liner number two.

YOU CAN’T INSPIRE OTHERS IF YOU DON’T FIRST INSPIRE YOURSELF.

And how do you inspire yourself… inspiration – breathing in.

Think on the in breath speak on the out breath.

And guess what, you can’t breathe in while you’re talking, you can only breathe in while you’re pausing.

So this one liner is so great to embed in your body. It makes you pause, it makes you breathe in, and a voice supporting by beautiful air flow is strong and resonant.

You don’t get voices like this.

You a voice like this. And that is how you inspire others, by first inspiring yourself.

And finally, a phrase very well known in the public speaking world, and one of my favourites – YOU CAN’T BE NERVOUS IF YOU STAND IN SERVICE.

When you shift the focus from yourself to how you can help others, the fear fades.

You can’t fearful and grateful at the same time.

Lots of public speaking fear begins with an I or my statement.

Think about it

I’m not prepared.

I’m bad at this.

My heart is pounding.

I’m nervous.

I feel sick about this.

So get off Me-Me Island and remember your message is greater than yourself.

Who are you there to serve?

This one question will alleviate so much panic.

Because you can’t be nervous if you stand in service.

So there you have it SET THE ENERGY, DON’T GET THE ENERGY. YOU CAN’T INSPIRE OTHERS IF YOU DON’T FIRST INSPIRE YOURSELF and YOU CAN’T BE NERVOUS IF YOU STAND IN SERVICE.

And if you want to learn HOW to master your energy and gauge the temperature of a room and shift it, if you want to learn how you should be breathing to best support your voice and you want to learn the tactical practical strategies for reducing your nerves before speaking …. Join SOUL SPEAKERS. This online group program has answers to all of the above, and we meet live at least once a month. Listening to podcasts is great -please leave a review – but sorry to say it won’t actually change anything without you making a commitment and taking action.

The link to find out more about Soul Speakers is in the shownotes, and as I mentioned at the start of this episode, there’s also the option to upgrade to Soul Speakers Advanced where you get the full one on one support.
