3 tips for tricky conversations

Just like a tricky conversation, best to bite the bullet and dive in!

Here are my 3 quick tips for handling those delicate dialogues:

1. Attack the problem, not the person: Avoid words like “you, why or me” and address the problem as though it was a third person in the conversation.

2. Listen to your body: Identify your early warning signs eg. pounding heart, shortening breath, tension creeping up your neck, maybe tears welling behind the eyes. Your physical state controls the words you use and how you use them, so you must address this first.

3. Prepare and practice: Write down the answers to these questions: What is the actual problem? What is the outcome you want? What are your key messages? What are the responses that could come your way?
